What is Cave Music?

//  03/01/2015

With improvisational big beats, burly bass and sexy saxophone melding together perfectly, Moon Hooch sounds a little like the love-child of Kenny G and Diplo (and I mean that in the best way possible). The trio, hailing from New York City, met in Jazz school and got their start busking in New York subways. James Muschler bangs skins while Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen play their hearts out on anything from saxophones to contrabass clarinets to parking cones.

Their unique sound can be attributed to their DIY instrument add-ons which attempt to mimic effects that are usually produced using electronic equipment. If asked, the band would describe their music as being “like house music, but more primitive and jagged and raw,” hence the title of their second album: This Is Cave Music, which introduces a little more post production and even some vocals courtesy of Mike Wilbur.

Concerts for cows? They’ve done it. They even have a blog where drummer James records their adventures and keeps a log of the vegan recipes they use on tour. Chances are you haven’t heard anything like Moon Hooch, so come see them do their thing and shake what your mama gave ya on March 25th at Club Dada!
